Pyotr Fyodorovich Anzhu (1796-1869), as the head of the Ust-Yana Polar Expedition, participated in the survey of part of Siberia's northern coast from 1820 to 1824, including the adjacent islands of Lyakhovsky, Kotelny, Faddeevsky, Novaya Sibir, and others. The expedition was the first to accurately map the northern coast of Siberia from Olenek to Indigirka. During the expedition, P. Anzhu traveled approximately 14,000 kilometers by dog sled and was the first to study the ice conditions in the Laptev Sea.
