Gavriil Andreevich Sarychev (1763-1831), part of the Northeastern Expedition of 1785-1793, traveled many kilometers on dog sleds and compiled excellent ethnographic descriptions. He was the first to note one of the key characteristics of northern dogs: «The dogs here are like our Russian ones, only they bark less, and howl instead.» He also described the design of the fan-shaped (Chukotka) sled.
