Among the defenders of Stalingrad, the 62nd Army included the 20th-4th separate detachment of tank destroyer dogs (commander Senior Lieutenant A.S. Kuniya). The detachment was part of the 10th Rifle Troops of the NKVD, which was the first to engage the Nazis. In the battle for Stalingrad, the 28th separate detachment of tank destroyer dogs destroyed 42 tanks, 2 armored vehicles, 4 machine guns, 2 machine gun emplacements, and 578 soldiers and officers. From August to October 1942, out of 214 men and 201 special detachments, only 54 men and 54 dogs remained alive.
In total, 63 German tanks were destroyed by extermination dogs on the Stalingrad Front.
