In order to prepare for the flight, the dogs underwent long-term training in a model of the satellite ship with a restraint system that allowed the animals to perform the range of movements necessary for normal life.

The time the dogs spent in a restrained position was gradually increased. The dogs were trained to wear sensors, restraining clothing, and a sewage disposal device. The training program also included acclimating the dogs to specially prepared mixtures from automatic feeding devices.
