Tank-destroying dogs entered service with the Red Army in 1939, but were not used in combat until the start of the Great Patriotic War.

From the very beginning of the Great Patriotic War, large-scale training of tank-destroying dogs was launched. Formed detachments of tank-destroying dogs were generally kept in reserve. They were deployed only in areas where major tank breakthroughs were expected.

In total, during the period 1941-1942, the Central School of Military Dog Training trained and sent to the front 2,217 soldiers and officers of the anti-tank service and 1,790 fighter dogs.

During the military operations of 1941-1942, 192 enemy tanks were destroyed;
With the help of tank-killing dogs, 18 tank attacks were repelled. From the report of the commander of the 30th Army, Lieutenant General Lelyushenko, dated March 14, 1942: «…anti-tank dogs are an integral part of anti-tank defense.»
